Jim Jarmusch's Father Mother Sister Brother is the centerpiece selection for the 63rd New York Film Festival.
Following the announcement yesterday of Luca Guadagnino's After the Hunt as the opening film, Film at Lincoln Center has selected Jim Jarmusch’s Father Mother Sister Brother as the Centerpiece feature for the 63rd New York Film Festival. After its world premiere at Venice, the film – featuring Cate Blanchett, Vicky Krieps, Adam Driver, Mayim Bialik, Tom Waits, Charlotte Rampling, Indya Moore, and Luka Sabbat – will have its North American premiere at Alice Tully Hall on October 3.
The NYFF synopsis reads: “Jim Jarmusch has spent years writing, directing, and producing nuanced, character-oriented films, including Stranger Than Paradise, Only Lovers Left Alive, Paterson, and Down by Law. Father Mother Sister Brother presents a thoughtful exploration of family dynamics, structured as a triptych. The three segments focus on adult children either reconnecting with or coming to terms with aging or absent parents, set in the present but across different countries. Siblings Jeff and Emily (Adam Driver and Mayim Bialik) check in on their reclusive father (Tom Waits) in rural New Jersey; sisters Lilith and Timothea (Vicky Krieps and Cate Blanchett) reunite with their guarded author mother (Charlotte Rampling) in Dublin; and twins Skye and Billy (Indya Moore and Luka Sabbat) return to their Paris home to confront a familial tragedy. Father Mother Sister Brother is an anti-action film, featuring a subtle and quiet style that allows minor details to accumulate much like flowers arranged delicately. As ever, Jarmusch breathes life into his films with the vital support of his collaborators, including accomplished cinematographers Frederick Elmes and Yorick Le Saux and talented editor Affonso Gonçalves. It is a MUBI release.”
Jim Jarmusch expressed, “I am extremely proud of the long-standing history of my works being showcased at the NYFF, and I am now truly honored that my latest film, Father Mother Sister Brother, has been chosen as this year’s Centerpiece. The NYFF, the church of my faith, has been a source of immense inspiration and insight for me, celebrating the profound and diverse beauty of cinema.”
Dennis Lim, Artistic Director of the New York Film Festival, remarked: “Jim Jarmusch’s new movie is not only one of his finest but encapsulates everything we love and appreciate about this unique filmmaker's vision in a stunning triptych. Father Mother Sister Brother is wise, generous, subtly humorous, and incredibly poignant, making it an honor for us to feature it as this year’s Centerpiece selection.”
