Ethan Hawke, Margaret Qualley, Bobby Cannavale, and Andrew Scott Are Seen Up Close in the Trailer for Richard Linklater’s Blue Moon.

There has been considerable buzz surrounding Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague, which premiered at Cannes, that one might forget his earlier film, Blue Moon, which debuted at the Berlinale just three months ago. Sony Pictures Classics is set to release it theatrically on October 17, which already places it ahead of the Godard biopic’s Netflix arrangement. Ahead of the release, a trailer has been released featuring Ethan Hawke, Margaret Qualley, Bobby Cannavale, and Silver Bear recipient Andrew Scott.

As noted by David Katz in his review, “Blue Moon, which had its world premiere at the Berlinale, reflects Linklater’s beautifully personal style, showcasing his unique idiosyncrasies. What sets this film apart in his body of work is that it represents a stage in a mature career. It’s not that Linklater lacks anything to prove—stories like Robert Kaplow’s, set in the nuanced and distant world of mid-WWII New York theater, can often make financiers hesitant. In a ‘legacy’ phase of one’s career, opportunities become less frequent; for Linklater, perhaps his next project will be a serious contender for awards, and new connections with talent may come into play. Lower expectations for the outcome enable him to reveal his true self as an artist at this stage of his life.”

Touted as “a humorous tribute to classic Broadway,” here is the synopsis: “On the night of March 31, 1943, renowned lyricist Lorenz Hart grapples with his crumbling self-esteem at Sardi’s bar while his former partner Richard Rodgers celebrates the premiere of his groundbreaking musical, Oklahoma!”
