Mel Gibson is set to release Parts One and Two of Resurrection of the Christ in 2027.
Mel Gibson’s highly anticipated sequel to The Passion of the Christ, titled The Resurrection of the Christ, has received a release date and will be divided into two parts, as announced by Lionsgate on Wednesday.
The film distributor tweeted that the first part, The Resurrection of the Christ Part One, is set to debut on March 26, 2027 — Good Friday. Part Two will follow on May 6, 2027, which is Ascension Day.
The announcement of the two-part release took many film fans by surprise, with some likening the strategy to that of an Avengers film.

“I can’t believe Mel Gibson is taking the Infinity War to Endgame approach with our Lord and Savior,” one user tweeted.
“This is like Infinity War / Endgame for Christians,” another noted.
Earlier this year, Gibson shared with Joe Rogan that this new film, co-written with Randall Wallace, is akin to “an acid trip.”
“My brother, Randall, and I all kind of came together for this. So there’s a lot of good ideas, but also some wild concepts,” he explained. “To truly tell the story right, you have to start with the fall of the angels, which involves another location, another realm. You need to go to hell.”
He also mentioned plans to de-age Jim Cavaziel, who portrayed Jesus in the original film.
The Passion of the Christ, released in 2004, was co-produced and directed by Gibson, based on a script he wrote alongside Benedict Fitzgerald. It featured Maia Morgenstern as the Virgin Mary and Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene.
The film was a significant box office success, grossing over $600 million on a $30 million budget, and paved the way for various other Christian and biblical-themed productions.
The Passion of the Christ garnered mixed reviews, with some applauding the filmmaking and performances, while others criticized its violence as excessive. It received three Oscar nominations for Best Makeup, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Score.
The success of the film marked a pivotal moment for Gibson, who was previously known for his roles in the Mad Max and Lethal Weapon franchises before achieving acclaim for directing and starring in 1995’s Braveheart, for which he won Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director.
Following The Passion of the Christ, he directed Apocalypto, a 2006 action drama set in early 16th century Mesoamerica.
However, 2006 also marked a significant low point in his public life: On July 28, 2006, he was arrested for drunk driving and made anti-Semitic comments to the arresting officer, stating, “Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world. Are you a Jew?” This incident fueled assertions from some critics that The Passion of the Christ bore anti-Semitic themes.
Gibson later issued an apology: “There is no excuse, nor should there be any tolerance, for anyone who thinks or expresses any kind of anti-Semitic remark. I want to specifically apologize to everyone in the Jewish community for the vitriolic and harmful words that I directed at a law enforcement officer the night of my DUI arrest.”
However, years later, audio recordings allegedly featuring Gibson, containing racial slurs, insults, and threats, further tarnished his reputation.
By 2016, Gibson had begun a comeback, directing the critically acclaimed Hacksaw Ridge, which won two Oscars.
In recent years, Mel Gibson has spoken about his recovery and spiritual turnaround, expressing gratitude to God for providing him with help.
“I view it as a miracle that I could appeal to something greater than myself to assist me and actually prevent me from continuing that behavior,” he told Rogan earlier this year. “For me, it is, and for many.”
The most recent film he directed was January’s Flight Risk, a thriller set on an airplane starring Mark Wahlberg. The film did not perform well, grossing only $48 million globally.
