The first trailer for "If I Had Legs I’d Kick You" features Rose Byrne in a state of uncertainty.
Seventeen years after her directorial debut, Yeast, which featured one of Greta Gerwig's earliest roles, Mary Bronstein is making her return with her second feature, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You. This film, which has been selected for Sundance and Berlinale and stars Rose Byrne in a remarkable performance, has just been announced for the New York Film Festival and is set for release on October 10. A24 has unveiled the first trailer.
The cast also includes Conan O’Brien, Danielle Macdonald, Christian Slater, and A$AP Rocky. The synopsis reads: “As her life unravels, Linda (Rose Byrne) struggles to manage her child’s enigmatic illness, her neglectful husband, a missing person, and a deteriorating relationship with her therapist.”
In our Sundance review, Jourdain Searles stated, “Throughout, Linda experiences nightmares regarding the hole in her ceiling, depicted as a dark, mysterious void that is driving her to madness. If I Had Legs I’d Kick You is a harsh, relentless film that highlights the never-ending journey of parenthood––Linda can never escape her role as a parent. Fathers are primarily seen in the film as disembodied voices over the phone, offering justifications for their absence in their child’s life. While it might be overly simplistic to portray fathers as disengaged, uninterested, and critical, this unfortunately reflects a common reality. Mothers are unable to leave, and when they do, it is often seen as the gravest offense. Bronstein’s screenplay courageously and incisively examines the roles they are compelled to fulfill in society and the heavy burden of nurturing a life.”
