The 63rd New York Film Festival has chosen Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere as its Spotlight Gala presentation.
Following the announcement of the Main Slate and Currents lineups, the 63rd New York Film Festival has disclosed its Spotlight Gala selection: Scott Cooper’s *Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere*, which will premiere on Sunday, September 28. Scott Cooper, along with cast members Jeremy Allen White, Jeremy Strong, and Odessa Young, will be present, along with Bruce Springsteen. The festival is scheduled to run from September 26 to October 13, while the film is set to hit theaters on October 24.
Here’s the synopsis from NYFF: “In this elegant and deeply moving film, Jeremy Allen White takes on the iconic Bruce Springsteen, revealing his essence through a specific period of the legendary American rock artist's life. *Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere*, directed by Scott Cooper and adapted from Warren Zanes’s 2023 best-selling book, portrays a pivotal moment in the early '80s of Springsteen's career. It captures the time when he was navigating the tumultuous waves of his growing fame and created the personal acoustic tracks that culminated in the legendary album Nebraska, while simultaneously recording demos for Born in the U.S.A., which would send him to international stardom. This biographical drama closely examines the intricacies of Springsteen’s songwriting process, while also confronting his familial struggles and personal battles with depression. It's not only a showcase for its luminous star but also a poignant reminder of what makes this seemingly larger-than-life figure so relatable. The film features an exceptional supporting cast, including Jeremy Strong as Springsteen’s longtime manager Jon Landau, along with Stephen Graham and Gaby Hoffmann portraying Bruce’s parents, Paul Walter Hauser, David Krumholtz, and Odessa Young. Produced by Cooper, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Eric Robinson, and Scott Stuber, with executive production by Tracey Landon and Zanes. This is a release from 20th Century Studios.”
Director Scott Cooper expressed, “The New York Film Festival has always seemed like a spiritual home for the type of cinema I stand behind. Arriving with a film about Bruce Springsteen—an artist whose music has influenced not just a nation but also my own narrative style—is something I never anticipated. Engaging with Bruce, exploring his world and spirit, has been one of the most significant creative journeys of my life. To present that experience to New York audiences, in a city that embodies artistic possibility, is an honor and a responsibility that I embrace with profound gratitude.”
Dennis Lim, the Artistic Director of the New York Film Festival, commented, “Channeling the raw majesty of Bruce Springsteen’s classic album Nebraska, Scott Cooper’s *Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere* resonates with an intimacy and immediacy that many film biographies lack. Jeremy Allen White’s extraordinary performance anchors this year's Spotlight Gala selection, making it a meaningful tribute to a living icon.”
The 63rd New York Film Festival is scheduled for September 26 through October 13, with passes currently available for purchase. Tickets will go on sale on September 18.
