James Gunn will write and direct the upcoming film in the Super-Family franchise.

With Superman achieving a box office total of $579 million this weekend, it has been revealed that James Gunn will be collaborating again with David Corenswet’s version of Man of Steel for the director's second project in the new DC Universe, although it appears it won't be a traditional direct sequel.

According to Variety, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav announced that Gunn is in the process of writing a new film featuring Corenswet’s Superman, which he will also direct, referring to it as the “next movie in the Super-Family.”

What this entails is still uncertain—could it involve a Superman and Supergirl partnership, an ensemble with Superman and the Justice Gang, or possibly a Krypto solo adventure? Given that Zack Snyder and the previous DCEU followed Man of Steel with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, we can likely dismiss the idea of a World’s Finest film at this early stage of the new narrative.

Following the rebooted DCU will be the second season of James Gunn’s Peacemaker series, set to debut on HBO Max later this month [watch the trailer here]. Meanwhile, 2026 will see the release of the Green Lantern series titled Lanterns, along with the feature films Supergirl directed by Craig Gillespie in June and Clayface directed by James Watkins in September.
