Exclusive Trailer for Zoë Eisenberg’s Slamdance Award-Winning Film Chaperone, Scheduled for Release This Fall

Making its debut at the Slamdance Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Award for Best Breakout Feature, Zoë Eisenberg’s romantic drama Chaperone is set to release this fall, hitting theaters in Hawaii on September 11 before its digital premiere on October 3. The cast includes Mitzi Akaha, Laird Akeo, Kanoa Goo, Krista Alvarez, and Jessica Jade Andres. In advance of the release, we are excited to present the first trailer exclusively.

Located in Hilo, Hawaii and showcasing an entirely AANHPI cast, Chaperone centers on Misha, a 29-year-old woman without ambitions who finds a perilous acceptance from a vibrant 18-year-old athlete who mistakes her for a high school student. The film is also notable as Zoë Eisenberg becomes only the fourth female filmmaker to direct a feature entirely filmed in Hawaii.

“When I was 29, a 17-year-old boy confused me for a teenager and invited me to a party. Although I turned him down, I couldn’t help but wonder: what kind of woman would have accepted the invitation? This sparked further questions for me,” said the director. “What occurs when a woman decides not to chase after a career or motherhood, which are the two limited paths society provides for women? How do you respond when your ambitions regularly let down those around you? Before my creative career, I spent ten years in a corporate environment where I didn’t relate to my career-oriented, family-focused coworkers. Am I succeeding as an adult if I don’t reflect anyone from my surroundings? And who do you choose to be with when you feel disconnected from your peers? Are individuals like Misha imperfect, or are society’s standards for defining adulthood flawed, and if they are, what are the implications? Who will bear the consequences?”
