The initial teaser for Jim Jarmusch's Father Mother Sister Brother has been released in anticipation of its Christmas debut.

It has been six years since The Dead Don’t Die (long enough for that movie to have become underrated), and Jim Jarmusch returns with Father Mother Sister Brother. This new film revisits the episodic format seen in Night on Earth and Coffee and Cigarettes, weaving together three family narratives featuring Cate Blanchett, Vicky Krieps, Adam Driver, Tom Waits, Mayim Bialik, Charlotte Rampling, Indya Moore, and Luka Sabbat. With MUBI set to release it on December 24 and its premieres at Venice and NYFF approaching, the first teaser trailer has been unveiled.

Here’s the synopsis from NYFF: “For years, Jim Jarmusch has crafted tender, character-focused films such as Stranger Than Paradise (NYFF22), Down by Law (NYFF24 Opening Night), Only Lovers Left Alive (NYFF51), and Paterson (NYFF54). Father Mother Sister Brother serves as a nuanced exploration of family dynamics, presented as a meticulously designed triptych. Each of the three segments addresses the connections between adult children and their aging or deceased parents, set in the present and across different countries. Siblings Jeff and Emily (Adam Driver and Mayim Bialik) visit their reclusive father (Tom Waits) in rural New Jersey; sisters Lilith and Timothea (Vicky Krieps and Cate Blanchett) reconnect with their reserved novelist mother (Charlotte Rampling) in Dublin; and twins Skye and Billy (Indya Moore and Luka Sabbat) return to their Paris home to confront a family tragedy. Father Mother Sister Brother is an anti-action film, utilizing a subtle and understated style that allows small details to build up—much like flowers being carefully arranged in three delicate bouquets. As always, Jarmusch’s vision comes to life with invaluable contributions from his collaborators, including skilled cinematographers Frederick Elmes and Yorick Le Saux, and the talented editor Affonso Gonçalves.”
