Fede Álvarez will hand over directing duties to another filmmaker for the sequel to Alien: Romulus.

Fede Álvarez will hand over directing duties to another filmmaker for the sequel to Alien: Romulus.

With widespread acclaim and $351 million in global earnings, Fede Álvarez has effectively revived the Alien franchise with Alien: Romulus. However, just a couple of months before production was slated to begin on the sequel, the director announced that he would be “passing the torch” to another filmmaker.

In an interview with TooFab, Alvarez stated that although he had completed the script for the sequel, he wouldn’t be directing it. Instead, he and Alien director and Romulus producer Ridley Scott are searching for a new director to continue the narrative.

“We just finished the script for a sequel to Romulus. But I’m going to pass the torch as director on this one,” he explained. “I’m going to produce it alongside Ridley Scott. We’re in the process of finding a new director to take over.”

This decision aligns with the original Alien Quadrilogy, where a different director helmed each film – James Cameron, David Fincher, and Jean-Pierre Jeunet.

“That’s typically what has happened, except for Ridley. Filmmakers come in, make one film, and then pass the baton to the next,” Alvarez added. “But we wrote the story because we genuinely love what we initiated with Romulus and want to continue it. We care about the story, and now we are eager to find a director who is ready to dive in passionately.”

Fans of Alien are likely feeling thrilled right now, especially considering the ongoing success of Alien: Earth, which is currently one of the best shows on television. Share your thoughts on this news by reaching out to us on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
