The Conjuring: Last Rites achieves the second largest global opening for a horror film at the box office.
Lorraine Warren has experienced her fair share of premonitions throughout The Conjuring franchise, but even she could not have predicted the box-office success of The Conjuring: Last Rites. The fourth and "final" installment in the main Conjuring series was expected to earn around $40 million domestically, but the $55 million budgeted horror film exceeded expectations with $83 million, achieving the second-largest global horror opening ever at $187 million. This is just behind Stephen King’s It Chapter One, which opened with $190 million in 2017.
We described The Conjuring: Last Rites as “an entertaining last ride” in our ★★★ review (which you can read here), and it seems that audiences worldwide share that sentiment. Directed by Michael Chaves, this sequel contributes to the $2.3 billion grossed by The Conjuring Universe at the global box office. The highest-grossing film is 2018’s The Nun, which earned $365.6 million, while the top installment featuring Ed and Lorraine Warren is The Conjuring 2, which made $322 million in 2016.
