The Criterion Collection’s lineup for December features His Girl Friday and Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure in 4K.
And just like that, Criterion's lineup for 2025 is finalized. A remarkable year comes to a close with Tim Burton being welcomed into their esteemed collection (possibly via the most fitting choice) as Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure is released in 4K. Recognition is also given to Mira Nair’s Salaam Bombay! (arriving just in time for her son's election as New York City’s mayor) and Spike Lee’s David Byrne’s American Utopia, which, despite my negative review from 2020, surprisingly did not impact its reception.
In terms of upgrades, December will see the release of Howard Hawks’ His Girl Friday, which may benefit most from the extremely quick dialogue enhanced by a higher-fidelity soundtrack; this is also true for Powell and Pressburger’s I Know Where I’m Going!, an earlier release at spine 94. Additionally, the Jim Jarmusch-scored Man-Ray collection, Return to Reason, will be available on Blu-ray.
