Rest in peace, Robert Redford (1936 - 2025).
The iconic Hollywood actor and director Robert Redford has passed away at the age of 89, with his representatives releasing a statement confirming that he "died on September 16, 2025, at his home in Sundance, Utah—the place he cherished, surrounded by loved ones. He will be profoundly missed."
Redford was born in Santa Monica, California, in 1936. He began his career on Broadway in the late 1950s before becoming a familiar face on television with guest roles in various popular shows during the early 1960s. His film debut came in 1960 with Tall Story, where he starred alongside fellow newcomer Jane Fonda in the first of several collaborations between the two stars (later films included 1966’s The Chase, 1967’s Barefoot in the Park, 1979’s The Electric Horseman, and 2017’s Our Souls at Night), and he won the Golden Globe for Best New Star for 1965’s Inside Daisy Clover.
International fame followed for Redford when he co-starred with Paul Newman in 1969’s Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, solidifying his status as one of Hollywood’s leading and most profitable stars during the subsequent decade with films like Jeremiah Johnson, The Way We Were, The Sting (which garnered him his only Oscar nomination for Best Actor), Three Days of the Condor, and All the President’s Men.
His directorial debut came with 1980’s Ordinary People, marking the beginning of his filmmaking career, which earned him Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture. His other directing works include A River Runs Through It, Quiz Show (which won him a second Best Director Oscar and a Best Picture nomination), The Horse Whisperer, The Legend of Bagger Vance, Lions for Lambs, and The Company You Keep.
Redford also continued to act throughout his career, appearing in notable films such as Out of Africa, Indecent Proposal, Spy Game, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, A Walk in the Woods, The Old Man and the Gun, and his final appearance in Avengers: Endgame.
Beyond his film contributions, Redford was a co-founder of the Sundance Film Festival and the Sundance Institute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting independent filmmakers and artists.
