Dr. Charles McNider, a physician, was requested by the police to assist a key witness against mobster “Killer” Maroni. While he was providing treatment to the gravely injured man, a thug hurled a hand grenade at them, resulting in McNider being blinded by the explosion. Afterward, he discovered he could see in the dark, similar to an owl, but was blinded by bright light. He created a pair of special “infrared glasses” that allowed him to see during the day as well. McNider then took on the costumed persona of Doctor Mid-Nite to apprehend Maroni. Doctor Mid-Nite was part of the All-Star Squadron and was a long-time member of the Justice Society of America.
