Observe the confrontation between Francis Ford Coppola and Shia LaBeouf during the filming of Megalopolis.
Is Shia LaBeouf a more proficient director than Francis Ford Coppola? This is a notion that may only exist in LaBeouf's mind, particularly as shown in an exclusive new clip from the behind-the-scenes of Megalopolis. Captured by Mike Figgis, who was granted access to the set of the renowned director’s massive production, the documentary chronicling its creation is now arriving with MEGADOC. In anticipation of Friday's theatrical release from Utopia, we're excited to exclusively present a new clip that showcases LaBeouf attempting to block a scene with Jon Voight and clearly testing Coppola's patience.
In his review, David Katz stated, “With closer parallels to Apocalypse Now in its self-financed origin than in his studio-supported highlights (which extend to Bram Stoker’s Dracula in the early ‘90s), it was apparent that a documentary capturing the on-location events needed to be created. Enter Mike Figgis, well-acquainted with iconoclastic, independent narratives and Hollywood-revenge tales. While watching MEGADOC, the 107-minute film premiering this week at the Venice Film Festival, we can't help but question what Figgis was restricted from showcasing. Nonetheless, his work is essential for comprehending what Megalopolis is and what impeded it, perhaps suggesting that greatness was not its fate.”
“I empathized with his frustration,” Figgis shared with Ethan Vestby in a recent interview. “In a way, I felt frustrated myself, thinking, ‘There’s a simpler way to approach this, Francis, but you've become a prisoner of your own budget.’ The higher the expenditure, the slower the process becomes. Additionally, with increased spending, the actors often adopt a Hollywood mentality of, ‘Since you’re paying a lot, I deserve to be treated differently; I want a trailer, and so forth.’ So, during Timecode, the arrangement was: everyone received the same pay, and there were no trailers.”
