Comic Book Review - Street Sharks Issue #1
Andrew Newton reviews Street Sharks #1…
For fans of 90s cartoons, Street Sharks #1 from IDW could prove to be a delightful trip down memory lane. Written by Stephanie Williams and illustrated by Ariel Medel, this issue bursts with the action-packed, exaggerated fun that defines the classic 90s series.
From the very beginning, we dive straight into the action as the four shark brothers rush in to thwart a heist at a tech factory. In true Street Shark style, they confront the trio of villains—Slobster, Slash, and Killamari—who, despite their attempts to create chaos, are ultimately forced to flee. This quick-paced introduction establishes the energetic tone for the rest of the issue.
What is particularly impressive is the equilibrium between action and narrative. Although a significant number of pages showcase the shark brothers demonstrating immense strength, the storyline consistently informs us of the ongoing events. Williams ensures that readers are not merely spectators of fight scenes; they are gradually being introduced to the overarching plot. Dr. Paradigm returns with a sinister scheme for Fission City, leaving readers intrigued about his motives for targeting this valuable technology. The issue raises just enough questions to entice you into picking up Issue #2 to discover how everything unfolds.
Ariel Medel's artwork is perfectly suited to a Street Sharks comic. It's vibrant and filled with color—much like many works from the 90s—which imbues the comic with a lively and enjoyable atmosphere that echoes the original animated series. Medel expertly illustrates dynamic poses throughout the numerous action scenes, ensuring each page captivates. Even in the quieter moments, the characters maintain that energetic and over-the-top essence that contributed to the show's iconic status.
Street Sharks #1 offers a compelling beginning to what promises to be an exciting series and is bound to evoke nostalgia in those who enjoyed the cartoon back in the day. Whether you are a longtime fan or a newcomer curious about these half-shark, half-human heroes, this first issue provides ample reasons to return for more.
Rating: This latest adventure featuring the biggest fish in Fission City scores an 8/10.
