Production of Spaceballs 2 has officially started.
Channeling J.J. Abrams and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the cast and crew of Amazon MGM Studios' sequel to Spaceballs have gathered for an official 'table read' photo, marking the commencement of production on the follow-up to Mel Brooks' iconic 1987 space opera parody.
It appears they have moved away from the previously considered title Spaceballs 2: The Schwartz Awakens, which was suggested back in June when the project was first revealed. The official press release mentions that “while the title and plot details remain undisclosed, it is speculated that the film may carry this title, and plot elements are characterized as information regarding the storyline.”
The press release confirms the return of previously announced cast members Rick Moranis (Dark Helmet), Bill Pullman (Lone Starr), Daphne Zuniga (Princess Vespa), and Brooks (President Skroob/Yogurt), along with George Wyner as Colonel Sandurz. New cast members include co-writer Josh Gad (Frozen), Keke Palmer (Nope), Anthony Carrigan (Superman), and Lewis Pullman (Thunderbolts*), with the latter portraying Starburst, the son of Lone Starr and Vespa.
Directed by Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar), Spaceballs 2 is based on a script by Gad and co-writers Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem). The film is slated for a theatrical release in 2027.
About Gary Collinson: Gary Collinson is a producer and writer in film, TV, and digital content, having established the pop culture website Flickering Myth. He is also the producer behind the gothic horror feature film 'The Baby in the Basket' and the forthcoming suspense thriller 'Death Among the Pines.'
