Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford have been promoted to series regulars for the fourth season of The Diplomat.

In anticipation of the third season launch of The Diplomat on Netflix in a few weeks, the streaming service has announced that viewers will see more of Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford in the fourth season as they have been elevated to series regulars. Janney joined the cast in the second season as Vice President Grace Penn, and after the President’s unexpected death in the season two finale, she is now the Commander in Chief. She will continue in a recurring role for season 3, which introduces Bradley Whitford as her husband Todd Penn, the First Gentleman.

“Collaborating with Allison and Brad, witnessing their dynamic once more, along with the incredible chemistry they share with Keri and Rufus ... it’s a thrilling experience,” remarked series creator Debora Cahn. “Our expectations were high, and they surpassed them completely.”

The forthcoming season of The Diplomat will depict rising tensions for Keri Russell’s character, Kate Wyler, who begins on shaky ground with the new President, whom she has just accused of planning a terrorist act. The cast also features Rufus Sewell as Hal Wylder, David Gyasi as British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison, Ali Ahn as CIA Station Chief Eidra Park, Ato Essandoh as Deputy Chief of Mission Stuart Hayford, Rory Kinnear as British Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge, and Aiden Turner.

In Season 3, Ambassador Kate Wyler finds herself living the unique nightmare of achieving her desires. She has just accused Vice President Grace Penn of orchestrating a terrorist plot and has confessed her ambition for the VP position. However, with the President now deceased—possibly due to actions by her husband Hal—and Grace Penn taking charge of the country, Hal's attempts to secure the vice presidency for Kate do not falter. Kate steps into a role she never sought, experiencing unexpected freedom, navigating a complex friendship with Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison, and developing an uneasy connection with First Gentleman Todd Penn.

The Diplomat will debut on Netflix on October 16th.
