Black Phone 2 rings up $ million globally during its opening for Blumhouse.
It has been a challenging year for Blumhouse at the box office, but the Grabber has turned things around with an impressive opening of $26.5 million for Scott Derrickson’s Black Phone 2. We described Black Phone 2 as “another brutal treat, featuring a memorable chilling and gory confrontation on ice” in our ★★★ review (which you can read here), and audiences seem to agree, as the horror sequel surpassed the original’s opening by nearly $3 million, accumulating a total of $42 million globally against a budget of only $30 million.
This gross brings an end to a disastrous streak of returns for Jason Blum’s Universal-based production company, which included the January flop Wolf Man ($35 million) and culminated in one of the year’s biggest letdowns, M3GAN 2.0 ($39 million).
Other news wasn’t as positive for a different new release about resurrected individuals, Aziz Anzari’s debut feature Good Fortune, which stars Seth Rogen, Keke Palmer, Sandra Oh, and Keanu Reeves as a returning angel, managing only $6.2 million at the domestic box office.
That total wasn't enough to surpass Disney’s unwanted sequel, Tron: Ares, which experienced a digital setback, falling to just $11.1 million in its second weekend. The $180 million budgeted sequel has so far earned only $103 million worldwide.
