      Halloween is once again upon us, and while children prepare for trick-or-treating and adults settle in for their favorite horror films, one alternative to classic slashers and intensely chilling supernatural movies is the Ghostbusters franchise. The original Ghostbusters and its sequels are undoubtedly funny, but there are genuine frights found not only in the films but perhaps even more so in The Real Ghostbusters animated series.

      Spinning off the immense popularity of the original Ghostbusters film, The Real Ghostbusters followed the escapades of Pete, Ray, Egon, and Winston as they captured ghosts in New York City and sometimes beyond. One of the standout features of the series was how it, despite being a cartoon aimed at young fans of the film, often ventured into disturbingly eerie imagery and frightening ghosts or supernatural entities often inspired by real myths. Some episodes delivered a level of intensity that terrified me as a child, and even now as an adult, I can't help but wonder how some of these stories made it past the censors. To honor Halloween, here are a few of the most chilling Real Ghostbusters episodes worth watching.

      Knock, Knock

      A common trope in horror films is that when someone hears strange noises or finds peculiar locations underground, they feel compelled to investigate, often unleashing whatever supernatural entity resides there, regardless of how foolish it may seem. The Real Ghostbusters embraced this trope in 'Knock, Knock,' where subway workers come across a massive red door buried beneath a subway line in New York that ominously warns them, “Do not open until Doomsday.” Ignoring the warning, they proceed with their construction anyway, inadvertently unleashing energy from another dimension that alters everything it encounters.

      Written by J. Michael Straczynski, 'Knock, Knock' offers a surreal experience for the Ghostbusters as they delve into the transformative depths of NYC, confronting several Lovecraftian horrors as they approach the Doomsday Door. The episode features eerie scenes, from the Ghostbusters finding themselves alone in a subway car only to be surrounded by skeletons and ghouls when the lights flicker, to a half-man half-tree eldritch abomination, all enhanced by the impressive animation.

      The Thing in Mrs. Faversham’s Attic

      Basements, closets, and attics are classic sources of children's nightmares, and Straczynski brilliantly capitalized on that in 'The Thing in Mrs. Faversham’s Attic.' An elderly woman calls the Ghostbusters to help with a disturbance in her house that has plagued her for decades, although the issue is confined to her attic. Once inside, the Ghostbusters discover a powerful and vengeful entity has been imprisoned there after being summoned by Faversham’s father, who was unable to control it and thus sealed it away, making his young daughter promise to never enter it. Left with no other options, the entity has transformed the attic, using its contents to torment both Mrs. Faversham and the Ghostbusters.

      A fascinating aspect of this episode is the ghost's various designs, as it shifts between different forms made from assorted clothing and objects until its final appearance is revealed. The attic of an old mansion serves as an intriguing backdrop for most of the action, but Straczynski also excels in developing Peter Venkman’s character just as much as the ghostly chaos. Always the sarcastic and detached character, Venkman is given more depth as it's revealed he harbors sympathy for elderly women due to his regret over not being there for his mother in her final days. The episode wraps up on a poignant note, with Pete choosing to offer Mrs. Faversham some much-needed companionship after the haunting is over.

      Mrs. Roger’s Neighborhood

      Not all elderly women are benevolent, as the Ghostbusters find out in 'Mrs. Roger’s Neighborhood' during a routine haunted house visit. When Mrs. Roger asks for the Ghostbusters' help in getting rid of some poltergeists, it turns out she is, in fact, the spirit they need to capture, using the trapped ghosts in her home to torment them as she sneaks into the firehouse to execute her plan of opening the containment unit and recruiting the freed ghosts for her army to take over the world.

      There's plenty of spookiness in this episode, as the Ghostbusters become ensnared in Mrs. Roger's haunted house filled with changing rooms, furniture, ghosts, and dimensional rifts. If this were a live-action R-rated film, it would fit right alongside Poltergeist as the team faces several of Roger's terrifying creations. To add to the horror, her true form can be quite frightening for a young audience, as can the possessed Peter Venkman when she attempts to force him to open the containment unit.
