Andrew Newton reviews the Dick Tracy Halloween Special…

Mad Cave’s Dick Tracy Halloween Special infuses the classic detective's universe with a touch of ghoulish charm, blending pulp crime with playful frights into a delightful seasonal offering. This issue embraces the Halloween theme with a sense of fun, while still delivering the sharp storytelling and clever twists that are characteristic of Dick Tracy narratives.

What better way to initiate the main story in the Halloween Special than with a zombie Dick Tracy meting out punishment to a man about to harm a child? It’s an excellent opening that immediately provokes questions: what has befallen Tracy, or is there something else going on?

As the plot progresses, the truth becomes intertwined with a murder mystery that takes center stage, and several of the detective’s most infamous adversaries seem to be running amok, or at least, individuals who resemble them. Tracy, Tess, and a young boy soon find themselves deeply involved in a case that revolves more around identity and deception than the supernatural, yet maintains a Halloween-related tension throughout.

The second story, a Halloween treat for long-time Tess fans, puts her in the limelight. A minor error on her part leads her into conflict with a shadowy gang and puts her in peril. This tale is shorter but satisfying, offering an easy read with a hint of spooky enjoyment that fits the special perfectly. It also complements the mood of the main story, concluding the issue on a warm, slightly mischievous note.

On the artistic side, the Dick Tracy Halloween Special is visually impressive. The artwork is crisp and clear, featuring clean lines and vibrant coloring that is bright and bold without being overpowering. This color usage gives each panel a distinct life. Considerable attention has been paid to detail, with backgrounds and expressions inviting readers to linger just a bit longer on each page.

With its blend of classic detective work, engaging mystery, and vivid art, the Dick Tracy Halloween Special serves as a fitting autumnal read—nostalgic, entertaining, and full of character. As an added bonus, the issue concludes with a teaser for Circus Maximus, Mad Cave’s forthcoming title.

Rating – Earns 9/10 treats and no tricks!
