Sound of Falling Trailer: Mascha Schilinski's Cannes Award Winner Set to Release This January

One of the most captivating highlights of this year's Cannes Film Festival was Mascha Schilinski's extensive family saga, Sound of Falling, which won the Jury Prize and subsequently became Germany’s entry for the Oscars this year. With a theatrical release set for January 16, MUBI has now shared the new U.S. trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: “Four girls—Alma (1910s), Erika (1940s), Angelika (1980s), and Lenka (2020s)—each spend their formative years on the same farm in northern Germany. As the home transforms over a century, remnants of the past resonate within its walls. Despite the time that separates them, their lives start to reflect one another, uncovering shared secrets that have remained concealed.”

Zhuo-Ning Su mentioned in his review, “Mascha Schilinski’s second feature, Sound of Falling, is the first competition film to be shown at Cannes this year. If this is any indication, we might be in for a remarkable festival edition. Spanning a century on a northern German farm, this highly experimental and deeply unsettling narrative about the destinies of women and their historical echoes unfolds like a psychosexual fever dream on a grand scale. While it may bewilder and disturb many, dedicated cinephiles can consider this their next film to delve into. It’s quite a treat.”
