28 Years Later 3, starring Cillian Murphy, has been officially approved by Sony.

      Sony Pictures is officially proceeding with the third film in their 28 Years Later trilogy, featuring Cillian Murphy's return, while Alex Garland writes the script.

      The future of the unnamed trilogy conclusion was contingent on the performance of Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later and Nia DaCosta’s upcoming sequel, The Bone Temple, at the box office. The former was met with critical acclaim upon its release in June and grossed $150 million globally. Meanwhile, early screenings of DaCosta’s sequel, which was filmed concurrently with 28 Years Later, have received overwhelmingly positive responses, leading Deadline to report that a second sequel is already in the works just a day later.

      Cillian Murphy, celebrated for his role as zombie survivalist Jim in the 2002 original and who served as an executive producer on both 28 Years Later and The Bone Temple, is in discussions to reprise his role as the lead. Danny Boyle has also expressed his keen interest in directing this potential third installment.

      Slated for release on January 14 next year, The Bone Temple continues from the contentious conclusion of 28 Years Later, shifting its focus from Spike’s storyline to that of Jimmy Crystal, a cult leader portrayed by Jack O'Connell, as he faces off against Dr. Kelson, played superbly by Ralph Fiennes.
