All the Movies and Books Steven Soderbergh Engaged with in 2025

It's that time of year once more. While many directors annually divulge their favorite films of the year, Steven Soderbergh instead lists everything he's consumed in terms of media. In 2025—another productive year where he released two films and debuted another—he certainly managed to watch a lot.

Besides catching up on the new releases from 2025 (including One Battle After Another, It Was Just an Accident, The Secret Agent, Sirat, The Mastermind, Sinners, 28 Years Later, The Naked Gun, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Cover-Up, Nouvelle Vague, and Happy Gilmore 2, among others), he also indulged in numerous classics from filmmakers like Steven Spielberg, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Alfred Hitchcock, Luis Buñuel, Stanley Kubrick, Roman Polanski, and others.

He had an early preview of the Sundance-bound Once Upon a Time in Harlem, and after kicking off production on The Christophers on February 7, he had a first cut ready by February 13. He further completed drafts for the long-gestating 12-hour adaptation of John Barth’s 1960 novel The Sot-Weed Factor, his HBO Max series adaptation The Other Hamilton (about Wall Street’s first Black millionaire), and enigmatic projects named Bloodworth Manor and Ascenso.
