Avatar: Fire and Ash marks James Cameron's fourth film in a row to gross over a billion dollars.
James Cameron became the first director to surpass the billion-dollar threshold at the box office with his 1997 film Titanic. Now, after directing a trilogy of Avatar films, he has achieved the distinction of being the first director to release four consecutive billion-dollar-grossing films, with Avatar: Fire and Ash reaching this milestone over the weekend.
The third Avatar installment earned $306 million in North America and $777.1 million internationally, bringing its total to $1.08 billion by the end of its third weekend. This figure also allows it to surpass Disney's live-action Lilo & Stitch, making it the third highest-grossing film of 2025, following Zootopia 2 ($1.588 billion) and Ne Zha 2 ($2.244 billion).
While Cameron is the first director to achieve four billion-dollar movies, he is likely to be joined in this category by Anthony and Joe Russo when Marvel Studios releases Avengers: Doomsday this December. However, the Russo brothers will not have accomplished this consecutively, as they directed Cherry, The Gray Man, and The Electric State in the years after Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.
The pressing question for Cameron now is whether he can extend his record for the most films to earn over $2 billion. He currently has three – also consecutively – and while analysts anticipate that Fire and Ash may finish with a total between $1.7 billion and $1.8 billion, Cameron has repeatedly shown that it's unwise to bet against him at the box office. And if that doesn't happen, there are always re-releases to consider.
In “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” James Cameron transports audiences back to Pandora for an immersive adventure featuring Marine-turned-Na’vi leader Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Na’vi warrior Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and the Sully family.
Avatar: Fire and Ash is directed by James Cameron and showcases the return of actors Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Giovanni Ribisi, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, Britain Dalton, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Jack Champion, Bailey Bass, Filip Geljo, Dileep A. Rao, Matt Gerald, and Brandan Cowell, while new cast members include David Thewlis, Oona Chaplin, and Michelle Yeoh.
Avatar: Fire and Ash is currently showing exclusively in theaters.
