Brian De Palma is set to direct Sweet Vengeance this summer.
I had received word from a couple of trustworthy sources that Brian De Palma had retired from filmmaking; I’m very pleased to find out they were mistaken. A little over a year ago, De Palma himself confirmed his intention to create "one other film" that was already in the casting process, ensuring that the intriguing but flawed Domino would not be the last chapter of his career with such a notable transition to the end credits. However, as a director who is known for both limited funding and the passage of time, there was cause for curiosity, and that curiosity eventually turned into concern.
We can now confirm that De Palma is making a long-awaited comeback with Sweet Vengeance, which will be filmed in Portugal this summer. He initially announced the project back in 2018, sharing that it's "inspired by two true stories of murders" and appears to mimic true-crime narratives: "I’m interested in how they present the story of the crime, so I'll approach it the way [they] do on television." It could be a modern thriller in the style of Redacted—or, perhaps more aptly, "Be Black, Baby." A true filmmaker's dream.
One additional tease: we’ve heard that Sweet Vengeance features two classic De Palma set pieces, which probably indicates murders occurring in stairwells or elevators, possibly culminating in a lengthy, wordless scene of a man following a woman. Additional details, including casting information, will be released soon regarding what is already one of the most-anticipated projects of 2027.
