4K Ultra HD Rеviеw – Thunderheart (1992)
**Thunderheart, 1992.**
Directed by Michael Apted.
Starring Val Kilmer, Sam Shepard, Graham Greene, and Fred Ward.
**SYNOPSIS:**
Michael Apted's 1992 film Thunderheart makes its 4K Ultra HD debut, presenting a worthwhile option for enthusiasts, although the additional features are somewhat sparse. Accompanying a digital copy code, you'll find a commentary track featuring writer John Fusco and an archival featurette, which, while not extensive, are better than having no extras at all.
When narrating a story centered on any minority group, it’s easy to fall into simplistic portrayals, particularly when the narrative aims to reveal injustices faced by that group. However, films like Thunderheart demonstrate that minority communities are as complex and nuanced as any other aspect of humanity.
Set in an unspecified year during the late 1970s, Thunderheart features Val Kilmer as FBI agent Ray Levoi, who possesses a mixed Sioux background and is enlisted to assist fellow agent Frank “Cooch” Coutelle (Sam Shepard) in investigating the murder of a council member on a Native American reservation.
Ray is not keen on using his heritage to gain favor with the Native Americans on the reservation, where tensions are rising between the Aboriginal Rights Movement (ARM), which seeks liberation by any means, and those intending to collaborate with the U.S. government.
Cooch has narrowed down his list of suspects to activist and schoolteacher Maggie Eagle Bear (Sheila Tousey), who returned to the reservation after obtaining a college degree to support the ARM cause, and ARM leader Jimmy Looks Twice (John Trudell). Graham Greene portrays Walter Crow Horse, a tribal police officer suspicious of both agents.
As Cooch and Ray continue their investigation, their relationship becomes strained when Ray suspects that outsiders are interfering in tribal politics and attempting to conceal their involvement. Ray starts to embrace his Native American roots and forms a friendship with Walter Crow Horse, who utilizes traditional methods, such as interpreting details from footprints, to aid the inquiry.
Ultimately, Thunderheart may not have been among the most requested titles for the 4K Ultra HD format, but it certainly merits the upgrade. It appears this is the same 4K transfer featured in Sony’s 2024 Blu-ray edition, making full use of a 2160p presentation.
The film was shot using traditional techniques consistent with its era, and this is evident in its visual presentation. There is a noticeable amount of grain, which is to be expected, coupled with sharp and clear details. Director of photography Roger Deakins effectively showcased the South Dakota landscape, and this aspect shines through in the image quality.
The release includes a digital copy code (with no Blu-ray disc included), as well as a couple of archival bonus features. No new extras have been produced for this edition, but if it sells well, perhaps Sony may consider a more comprehensive version in the future, though that seems unlikely in the current home video market.
The commentary track features writer John Fusco as the sole participant, who starts by mentioning that he and director Michael Apted recorded a commentary for the film that has yet to be released. It’s unclear why it wasn't included here, but it may be available someday. Regardless, this commentary offers valuable insights into the film's creation from someone who conducted extensive research on the topic and can discuss more than just the production aspects.
Additionally, there’s a vintage featurette that runs just under 12 minutes, including various remarks from cast and crew members. While it’s not particularly remarkable, it’s still better than having no extras. The theatrical trailer completes the package.
