We Played the Audio Backwards for the 'It Wants to Be Heard' Undertone Trailer — Check This Out
A24 has taken over online discussions about horror with the launch of a new teaser trailer titled “It Wants to Be Heard” for the upcoming film The Undertone.
It didn't take long for fans, including ourselves, to notice that some of the unsettling audio featured in the teaser was music played in reverse. We even reversed that audio ourselves.
Surprisingly, the audio might sound even creepier when played forward. Here is the original version along with our reversed audio:
**What We Know About The Undertone So Far**
The Undertone, directed by newcomer Ian Tuason, premiered at the fantastic Fantasia Film Festival last summer. This festival, one of our favorites, also hosted the debut of Skinamarink, which leveraged online intrigue to become a significant success despite a small budget of only $10,000.
The Undertone aims to achieve similar success.
The film will be showcased at the Sundance Film Festival with a midnight screening later this month. It centers around the host of a popular paranormal podcast who starts experiencing haunting occurrences linked to terrifying recordings sent to her without explanation.
According to Sundance, “Overwhelmed by the duty of providing end-of-life care for her ailing mother, Evy (Nina Kiri) seeks relief from the isolation of her disjointed reality. Residing in a house filled with cherished keepsakes and memories, her stability and sanity depend on her work on a supernatural podcast, The Undertone. Though she typically maintains a skeptical stance toward the eerie (and often troubling) audio clips sent by co-host Justin (Adam DiMarco) for the podcast, the latest submission resonates on a different level.
“A series of ten unheard recordings from a young pregnant couple are revealed one by one, each increasingly foreboding,” continues the Sundance summary. “As Evy draws connections to her own situation, concealed messages emerge, driving her further into insanity.”
Deadline reported in August that A24 won the film in a bidding battle, stating, “the deal was for mid-7 figures."
In her description of the film for Fantasia Fest, programming director Carolyn Mauricette remarked, “Fans of SKINAMARINK and I AM THE PRETTY THING WHO LIVES IN THE HOUSE will appreciate this slow-burn nightmare that will raise the hair on your neck and send chills down your spine.”
The film's haunting marketing strategy has also drawn parallels to those used for Weapons and Longlegs, the latter being directed by Osgood Perkins, who helmed I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House.
