The Baldur's Gate TV series is being developed by HBO and Craig Mazin.
HBO has secured another video game franchise, teaming up with Hasbro Entertainment and Craig Mazin, co-creator of The Last of Us series, to transform Baldur’s Gate into a new fantasy television show.
The Baldur’s Gate video games are set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe, with the 2023 release of Baldur’s Gate III receiving acclaim as one of the most remarkable RPGs ever, praised for its gameplay, visuals, narrative, and the level of player control over characters and their environments. Developed by Larian Studios, Baldur’s Gate III achieved groundbreaking success, winning numerous awards at various events.
In the third installment, players and their main party work to thwart a formidable cult that seeks to control people’s minds using parasites, all while searching the land for a remedy before it's too late. Unlike the direct adaptation seen with The Last of Us, HBO and Mazin are pursuing a different approach with Baldur’s Gate; the series will act as a continuation of the games, unfolding a story that takes place immediately after the events of Baldur’s Gate III, with both returning and new characters grappling with the consequences of the previous game.
“After dedicating nearly 1000 hours to the remarkable realm of Baldur’s Gate III, it feels like a dream come true to extend the narrative crafted by Larian and Wizards of The Coast,” Mazin stated. “I am a passionate fan of D&D and truly appreciate how Swen Vincke and his talented team have interpreted it. I eagerly anticipate bringing Baldur’s Gate and its remarkable characters to life with the utmost respect and love, and I am incredibly grateful to Gabe Marano and his team at Hasbro for trusting me with this vital property.”
Mazin will serve as the writer and showrunner for the series and will also be an executive producer. He will be joined by Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O’Connor, and Hasbro Entertainment’s Gabriel Marano as executive producers, while Chris Perkins, Head of Story at Wizard of the Coast, will consult the team.
“The fans have been eagerly anticipating an adaptation of Baldur’s Gate, and we couldn't ask for better collaborators than HBO and the incredible Craig Mazin to help realize this universe,” Marano remarked.
“We are excited to continue our collaboration with Craig Mazin on Baldur’s Gate,” said Francesca Orsi, EVP and Head of HBO Drama Programming. “His profound and longstanding enthusiasm for the source material, combined with his exceptional skill in crafting immersive worlds filled with rich and engaging characters, promises groundbreaking outcomes.”
However, it will still be some time before development and production on Baldur’s Gate can officially commence, as Mazin is currently focused on the third and possibly final season of The Last of Us, set to begin filming in Vancouver soon.
