All 11 Star Wars Films Ranked from Least to Most Favorable

Here are all 11 Star Wars films ranked from worst to best as we anticipate the upcoming 12th installment, The Mandalorian & Grogu, releasing this summer.

Be warned, spoilers are ahead, and may the Force be with you, always.

      Let's dive in.

We adore Star Wars. However, part of being a Star Wars fan involves both embracing and defending your interpretation of the saga, as well as standing up against what seems like cash grabs or versions unworthy of the legacy.

Rogue One serves as a strong example of a project that captures the essence of Star Wars.

Below is the ranking of all 11 Star Wars films from worst to best.

      The Rise of Skywalker (2019)

We love Star Wars. However, the sequel trilogy that began with The Force Awakens sometimes felt like newcomers playing with vintage toys. While the costumes and starships were on point, the CGI backdrops proved somewhat distracting. The characters felt flat or lacking depth. You couldn't help but wonder: Why are we here? Hasn’t the Skywalker saga been told?

The Rise of Skywalker seemed the most desperate film of the sequel trilogy as it (spoilers ahead, final warning) inexplicably resurrected Emperor Palpatine and resolved Rey’s parentage mystery (which also begs the question: who cares?) by revealing he was her grandfather.

The usual magic just didn’t come through.

      The Force Awakens (2015)

An unremarkable film for all the previously mentioned reasons, but we have some additional complaints: The film brought Han Solo back only for his son to kill him, serving no real purpose beyond portraying the whiny Ben Solo/Kylo Ren as a real threat. Adam Driver isn’t to blame for Ren lacking the malevolence of Darth Vader or the Emperor: his character is simply written as a brat.

New characters Rey, Poe, and Finn never quite ignited; they lacked sufficient material to shine. The film made a crucial misstep by casting Lupita Nyong'o, a dynamic, Oscar-winning actress, in a forgettable CGI role as Maz Kanata. She should have been among the leads— and in human form. Regrettably, we included both The Rise of Skywalker and The Force Awakens in our list of sequels that nobody needs to see.

However, it was nice to see the original stars return.

      The Phantom Menace (1999)

We've never experienced a more disappointing movie-going moment than the premiere of The Phantom Menace: peculiar aliens with clichéd voices discussing… trade routes? After waiting 16 years since Return of the Jedi and lining up for a midnight showing… for this?

There were more flaws in The Phantom Menace—its CGI never matched the practical effects of the original trilogy, Jar Jar was unnecessary, and the midichlorian concepts were confusing. Nevertheless, there were positives.

Natalie Portman excelled as Padme Amidala, Liam Neeson portrayed Qui-Gon Jinn effectively, and Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi managed to channel Sir Alec Guinness while establishing his own identity. Darth Maul, portrayed by Ray Park, was a fantastic villain who exited far too soon. More on him later.

      Attack of the Clones (2002)

It was adequate. We appreciated the title, and it was great to meet Jango Fett.

Once again, Natalie Portman performed admirably—she is one of the most sympathetic characters in all of Star Wars and the emotional core of the prequels.

We wished her chemistry with Hayden Christensen had been stronger. Neither actor was at fault—they just had some awkward dialogue.

      Revenge of the Sith (2005)

Revenge of the Sith reaffirmed the unfortunate realization that, even at their finest, the prequels perhaps shouldn't have been made.

Similar to Hannibal Lecter, Freddy Krueger, and numerous other movie villains, Darth Vader becomes less intriguing the more backstory you provide.

Nonetheless, Vader remains one of the coolest aspects of the Star Wars universe, and it was exhilarating to see him again, 22 years after his demise in Return of the Jedi. We just wish it hadn’t taken three sometimes tedious prequel films to reach this moment.

Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)

This film lacks a true purpose besides profit. It doesn’t contribute much to Han Solo’s legend and instead fills in details already established in the original trilogy, which our imaginations could have elaborated upon. (Somehow hearing that the Millennium Falcon completed the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs is cooler than witnessing it.)

However, Solo doesn’t tarnish the legacy of Star Wars:
