Tony Leung and Léa Seydoux Nurture Nature in U.S. Trailer for Silent Friend, Set to Release This May.
In a remarkable pairing, Ildikó Enyedi has united Tony Leung and Léa Seydoux for Silent Friend, which narrates three interconnected stories centered around a tree over the span of over a century. After its premieres at Venice and TIFF, 1-2 Special will release the film in the U.S. starting May 8, and a new trailer has been revealed. Additionally, NYC’s Film at Lincoln Center will host a retrospective celebrating Tony Leung from April 29 to May 7, featuring Leung in person for select screenings.
Here’s the synopsis: “The film centers on a stunning ginkgo tree, situated in the middle of a botanical garden in a medieval university town in Germany. This silent observer has witnessed over a hundred years of quiet transformative moments across three lifetimes. In 2020, a neuroscientist from Hong Kong, delving into infant cognition, unexpectedly engages with the ancient tree. In 1972, a young student experiences a profound change through the simple act of observing and forming a connection with a geranium. In 1908, the university’s inaugural female student, through photography, uncovers sacred patterns of the universe concealed within even the most modest plants. Each person undergoes a gradual transformation through the quiet, enduring, and mysterious influence of nature, as the age-old ginkgo tree deepens our understanding of humanity.”
Savina Petkova noted in her Venice review, “Hungarian director Ildikó Enyedi is widely recognized for her 2017 Golden Bear-winning film On Body and Soul, which tells of an unlikely duo that meets in a dream and falls in love while as deer. This exceptionally tender Berlinale winner can be seen as a predecessor to Enyedi’s latest film, although it is important to mention the intervening work, The Story of My Wife (2021), a period piece about an obsessive romance featuring Léa Seydoux. Not that the latter is insignificant: the English-language debut gave Enyedi the chance to broaden her unique narratives beyond language and establish herself as a European auteur attracting actors. While Silent Friend showcases the formidable Tony Leung (and Seydoux in a minor role), the true star of this film is the ginkgo tree. If On Body and Soul focused on fauna, Silent Friend highlights flora.”
