First Glance at Martin Scorsese's What Happens at Night Featuring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence

      Almost three years after the debut of Killers of the Flower Moon at Cannes, Martin Scorsese has begun shooting his next film. Production started last month in the Czech Republic for Scorsese’s adaptation of Peter Cameron’s haunting novel What Happens at Night, which is scripted by Patrick Marber. The cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Mads Mikkelsen, Patricia Clarkson, and Jared Harris.

      This project marks a reunion with Apple Original Films, which will finance and produce this Gothic psychological horror alongside Studiocanal, and features the return of cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto and editor Thelma Schoonmaker, both of whom have collaborated with the director previously. As production is now in progress, a snowy first image showcasing DiCaprio (his seventh collaboration with Scorsese) and Lawrence has been released. While the schedule for wrapping up production in Prague is unclear, considering Scorsese’s typically lengthy post-production process, it’s likely we won’t see this film until 2027.

      Here’s the novel's synopsis: “An unnamed American couple travels to a peculiar, snowy city in Europe to adopt a baby. The journey proves challenging, leaving the wife, who is battling cancer, extremely weak, while her husband fears that her illness might hinder the orphanage from releasing their child. Upon arrival, they check into the vast and eerily empty Borgarfjaroasysla Grand Imperial Hotel, where the bar is perpetually open and the lobby is filled with a mysterious assortment of characters, from an elderly, flamboyant singer to a debauched businessman and a puzzling faith healer. In this perplexing, frozen setting, nothing is quite what it appears, and as the couple strives to obtain their baby, they find themselves increasingly uncertain about their marriage, their identities, and existence itself.”
