Ombres de soie Bande-annonce Exclusive : Le premier long-métrage de Mary Stephen, collaboratrice d'Éric Rohmer, a été restauré.

After its world premiere at the New York Film Festival last autumn and prior to its west coast debut at the Los Angeles Festival of Movies this weekend, we are delighted to exclusively unveil the poster and trailer for the newly restored 2K version of Ombres de Soie, the first feature film by Mary Stephen, a long-time collaborator of Éric Rohmer.

Here’s the synopsis from the New York Film Festival: “Mary Stephen, born in Hong Kong, established herself as a director to watch with her 1978 debut feature, after making a name for herself as a skilled film editor working alongside Éric Rohmer. Rich in atmospheric elements and possessing a dreamlike quality, Ombres de soie explores the relationship between two Chinese women in Shanghai in 1935. Through eye contact, body language, and intimate voice-overs, the women navigate the tension between their mutual desire for stability and the persistent feeling that their connection may hold deeper significance… This remarkable low-budget film, which uses 1970s Paris to stand in for 1930s Shanghai, resonates with the essence of Marguerite Duras’s India Song, which Stephen intentionally aimed to complement with Ombres de soie, offering an Asian woman's perspective.”

The restoration was done from a 16mm print that was scanned at Library and Archives Canada. The 2K restoration was executed at L’Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna in 2024, made possible by the generous support of M+, Hong Kong, 2024.

Check out below for the exclusive trailer and poster (designed by Tyler Rubenfeld) for the Several Futures release, along with a conversation featuring Stephen from last fall's New York Film Festival.
