Film Review – Desert Warrior (2026)

      **Desert Warrior, 2026.**

      Directed by Rupert Wyatt.

Starring Anthony Mackie, Aiysha Hart, Ben Kingsley, Ghassan Massoud, Sharlto Copley, Sami Bouajila, Lamis Ammar, Géza Röhrig, Numan Acar, Nabil Elouahabi, Hakeem Jomah, Ramsey Faragallah, Saïd Boumazoughe, and Soheil Bostani.

      **SYNOPSIS:**

Hanzala, a valiant yet enigmatic rogue, becomes an enemy of Emperor Kisra after assisting a fugitive king and princess while in the desert.

Aspiring to be a historical epic reminiscent of classic sword and sandal films, Rupert Wyatt's tale set in seventeenth-century Arabia proves to be disappointingly predictable and tiresomely uninspiring for a movie titled Desert Warrior. While the film does showcase some real locations and features impressive shots of various tribes charging into battle on horses and camels, it ultimately serves a muddled narrative that feels miscast and raises questions about the predominantly white creative team behind it.

The plot involves Emperor Kisra (Ben Kingsley, often distracting despite limited screen time) collecting women from various tribes to serve as his concubines, which sparks a revolution spearheaded by the determined Princess Hind (Aiysha Hart). She rallies the divided clans and formulates battle strategies, but the execution from Wyatt and screenwriters Erica Beeney, Gary Ross, and David Self feels superficial and disconnected from Arabic heritage and culture, resulting in a sluggish and incoherent film.

After her father's death and her escape from oppression, Princess Hind teams up with a troubled, unnamed bandit portrayed by Anthony Mackie, who seems to have been added primarily to elevate the film's star value while circumventing white savior critiques. This casting decision is perplexing, particularly given his minimal screen presence and lack of development. Furthermore, other characters introduced throughout the film are equally forgettable.

Princess Hind attempts to unite various factions by conversing with them individually, which lends an adventurous feel, yet fails to effectively utilize the stunning scenery. Moreover, the tribal leaders often lack depth, and the film does not adequately explore the reasons behind their conflicts. Dialogue throughout is disappointingly vague and unengaging, making the repeated interactions feel lifeless.

Desert Warrior does manage to enliven at times, and its excessive runtime of over two hours is a surprising feat. Significant moments of action between the factions allow Princess Hind to evolve as a warrior. When the tribes join forces for a large-scale battle, one can certainly appreciate the desire to tell this story with grandeur. Nonetheless, the overall experience remains as parched as the desert itself.
