Idiots Red Band Trailer: Dave Franco and O’Shea Jackson Jr. Star in Macon Blair's Comedy

      After making a name for himself with Blue Ruin, Macon Blair demonstrated his talent for direction with I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore, and this year, he returned to the Sundance Film Festival with his new project. Idiots (formerly known as The Shitheads) features a cast that includes Dave Franco, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Mason Thames, Kiernan Shipka, Nicholas Braun, and Peter Dinklage. Ahead of its release on August 28 through IFC, the first trailer and poster have been unveiled.

      Here’s the synopsis: “Two inept individuals are tasked with relocating a wealthy teenager (Mason Thames) to rehab, but their straightforward job quickly devolves into chaotic trouble.”

      Kent M. Wilhelm noted in his Sundance review, “With its relatable concept and classic structure, the road movie boasts a rich cinematic lineage. Its popularity has led to various subgenres, like the screwball escort film, where contrasting characters often clash while trying to reach a destination. Be it delivering someone to the Greek or catching a 3:10 train to Yuma, it’s a cherished trope that reappears every few years. In 2026, writer-director Macon Blair updates this formula for Idiots. He crafts a tumultuous journey for his prisoner-transport comedy, keeping the adventure engaging while also adding depth to what is otherwise a broad comedy. Though the steady two-hander doesn't quite reach great heights, it is enhanced by a lively mix of supporting characters that inject energy at the right moments.”
