Matthew Lillard is set to join the cast of the Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow.
With James Gunn currently working on Man of Tomorrow, the sequel to last summer’s successful Superman, the co-chairman of DC Studios has announced that Matthew Lillard will be joining the cast.
Details about Lillard’s role remain undisclosed, but Deadline reported his casting, which Gunn later confirmed on Instagram by posting a photo of himself with the actor. Lillard and Gunn have been friends for many years, as Lillard starred in the first live-action Scooby-Doo movie, written by Gunn. Lillard played Shaggy and returned for the sequel, as well as providing his voice for various Scooby-Doo animated series and films over the last two decades.
Man of Tomorrow will depict Superman and Lex Luthor reluctantly teaming up to confront the threat posed by Brainiac, one of Superman’s primary adversaries, who will debut in live-action with this film. The forthcoming DC Universe film, Supergirl, set for June 26th, will center on Milly Alcock’s Supergirl following her cameo at the conclusion of Superman. David Corenswet is also expected to reprise his role as the Man of Steel in this upcoming project.
Lillard recently returned to the Scream franchise in Scream 7, reprising his character Stu Macher from the original film, revealing that he survived his injuries and seeks revenge against Neve Campbell’s Sidney. He also appeared in the television series Cross and Daredevil: Born Again, and will next be seen in Mike Flanagan’s series adaptation of Stephen King’s horror classic, Carrie.
Man of Tomorrow brings back Superman stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., and Maria Gabriella de Faria as The Engineer. Aaron Pierre will reprise his Lanterns role as John Stewart/Green Lantern, while Lars Eidinger will portray Brainiac, and Adria Arjona will take on a role that may be either Maxima or Wonder Woman.
Man of Tomorrow is scheduled to be released on July 9th, 2027.
