Radu Jude is set to begin filming a new feature titled "Love Diptych" next month.
Following the premieres of two films in 2025 and with the debut of his latest feature, Diary of a Chambermaid, set to take place at Cannes, Radu Jude—perhaps aiming to make Hong Sang-soo appear slack—will begin filming a new project next month. Tentatively titled Love Diptych, it signifies "a resolution of [his] obligations to Romanian realities" and, similar to Kontinental ’25, is influenced by Roberto Rossellini, particularly his acclaimed film L’amore, which featured Anna Magnani in two distinct yet thematically linked narratives (or a diptych). The production, partly funded by Rodrigo Teixeira, is expected to span just 13 days in the villages of Dârza and Sitaru. With a premiere planned for early 2027, it's likely that Jude will showcase this film at Berlinale or Rotterdam once again.
Film New Europe shared the announcement, in which Jude provided this insight:
“I recently discussed Godard's reference to R.W. Fassbinder's 'creative obligations' to Germany, a concept I am increasingly drawn to. The independent film Love Diptych (working title) will adhere to this idea and embodies a resolution of my obligations to Romanian realities, to the cinematic history (as it engages in a dialogue with L’Amore by Roberto Rossellini), to the talented actors and filmmakers who choose to collaborate with me, to the producers who support the project (Alex Teodorescu, Rodrigo Teixeira, Christos V. Konstantakopoulos, Volodymyr and Anna Yatsenko), and, importantly, to the notion of low-budget cinema as a vital form of filmmaking.”
The cast includes Oana Maria Zaharia (Dracula, Bad Luck Banging), Nicoleta Hâncu, Endre Racz, and frequent Jude collaborators Șerban Pavlu and Gabriel Spahiu, with Lydia Lunch, Pierre Weiss, and Ilinca Manolache expected to make "special appearances." Jude's regular cinematographer Marius Panduru will be behind the camera, accompanied by editor Cătălin Cristuțiu and costume designer Cireșica Cuciuc, who are also returning for this project.
