Radu Jude will begin filming his new feature "Love Diptych" next month.
Following two debuts in 2025 and just before the premiere of his latest film, Diary of a Chambermaid, at Cannes, Radu Jude—possibly making Hong Sang-soo appear idler—will begin filming a new project next month. Tentatively titled Love Diptych, it signifies “a clearing of [his] obligation towards Romanian realities” and, akin to Kontinental ’25, is influenced by Roberto Rossellini, specifically his notable work L’amore, which presented Anna Magnani in two narratively distinct yet thematically linked stories (or: a diptych). The production, partially funded by Rodrigo Teixeira, is set to last only 13 days in the villages of Dârza and Sitaru. With a premiere planned for early 2027, it wouldn’t be surprising if Jude graced Berlinale or Rotterdam once again.
This announcement is brought to us by Film New Europe, where Jude provided the following insight:
“I recently discussed Godard’s reference to R.W. Fassbinder’s ‘creative obligations’ in relation to Germany, a concept that increasingly resonates with me. The independent film Love Diptych (working title) will embody this notion as it symbolizes a clearing of my obligation towards Romanian realities, the history of cinema (as it engages in a dialogue with L’Amore by Roberto Rossellini), the talented actors and film professionals willing to collaborate with me, the producers who have faith in the project (Alex Teodorescu, Rodrigo Teixeira, Christos V. Konstantakopoulos, Volodymyr, and Anna Yatsenko), and, importantly, the idea of low-budget cinema as a vital aspect of filmmaking.”
The cast includes Oana Maria Zaharia (Dracula, Bad Luck Banging), Nicoleta Hâncu, Endre Racz, as well as Jude's regulars Șerban Pavlu and Gabriel Spahiu, with Lydia Lunch, Pierre Weiss, and Ilinca Manolache expected to make “special appearances.” Jude’s consistent cinematographer Marius Panduru will be directing the camera work, while editor Cătălin Cristuțiu and costume designer Cireșica Cuciuc are also on board again.
