The trailer for the Ghost in the Shell anime series hints at a new chapter in cyberpunk action.
A fresh anime adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s legendary manga Ghost in the Shell is set to be released, developed by the renowned animation studio Science SARU. Ahead of its global debut at next month’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival, a new poster and trailer for the series, titled The Ghost in the Shell, have been unveiled, hinting at “a new era of cyberpunk action.” You can view them below, along with the official synopsis.
The year is 2029, in a near-future Japan where the world has become extremely reliant on information, with a massive corporate network enveloping the globe, pulsating with electrons and light. Nonetheless, the nation-state and ethnic groups endure.
Motoko Kusanagi, a fully-formed cyborg, leads an elite combat unit of other cyborgs, including Batou. While directing her team, Kusanagi imagines the establishment of a specialized task force to proactively address emerging threats. Meanwhile, Daisuke Aramaki from the Ministry of Home Affairs, who has been contemplating the formation of a similar unit, observes Kusanagi and her team.
Together, they initiate operations as Public Security Section 9 – a formidable tactical organization dubbed “Shell Squad.” As they tackle intricate cyber-crimes and international conspiracies, the presence of an enigmatic, unidentified hacker known as “the Puppet Master” begins to surface within their inquiry. What destiny lies ahead for Kusanagi? And what is the Puppet Master’s ultimate goal?
The Ghost in the Shell will debut at the Annecy International Film Festival in June, followed by a worldwide release on July 7th. It will be accessible internationally through Prime Video.
