A new anime adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s legendary manga Ghost in the Shell is on the horizon, created by the renowned animation studio Science SARU. A fresh poster and trailer for the series, titled The Ghost in the Shell, have been unveiled ahead of its worldwide premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival next month, hinting at “a new era of cyberpunk action.” Take a look below along with the official synopsis.
Set in 2029, in a near-future Japan, the world is highly information-driven, featuring a massive corporate network that spans the globe, with electrons and light coursing through it. Nonetheless, nation-states and ethnic groups continue to persist.
Motoko Kusanagi, a full-body cyborg, commands an elite squad of fellow cyborgs, including Batou. As she leads her team, Kusanagi conceives the formation of a specialized task force to proactively combat emerging threats. Simultaneously, Daisuke Aramaki from the Ministry of Home Affairs, who had intentions to form a similar unit, identifies Kusanagi and her team.
Together, they initiate operations as Public Security Section 9, a formidable tactical entity known as “Shell Squad.” As they tackle intricate cybercrimes and global conspiracies, the presence of a mysterious, unidentified hacker dubbed “the Puppet Master” begins to surface in their investigation. What fate lies in store for Kusanagi? And what is the actual goal of the Puppet Master?
The Ghost in the Shell will debut at the Annecy International Film Festival in June, followed by a global release on July 7th, available internationally through Prime Video.
