      What do you do when the latest installment in your action franchise flops at the box office? For Eclectic Pictures and Hollywood Ventures Group, the solution is to revive an idea from a decade ago by announcing a female-led spin-off of Expendables titled The Expendabelles.

      If this news sounds familiar, it's because back in 2013, names like Meryl Streep, Cameron Diaz, and Milla Jovovich were circulated, with Legally Blonde director Robert Luketic slated to direct the film in 2015.

      The Expendabelles even had an official synopsis that read, “Some of the world’s deadliest female operatives must pose as high-class call girls flown in by private jet to please a dictator—and instead save a scientist and the day.”

      Fast forward to Cannes 2026, where The Expendables 3 premiered in 2014. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project is moving forward once more, framing it as an origin story set in the late 1990s amidst the Y2K-era tension and geopolitical uncertainty. It aims to introduce a new generation of elite female operatives in a stylized, action-packed cinematic experience that seeks to broaden the franchise's mythology while remaining self-contained.

      Despite having earned over $855 million globally across four films, the series produced by Sylvester Stallone seemed to lose momentum with Expendables 4, which notably underperformed with only $37 million in 2023.
