      What should you do when the latest installment in your action franchise flops at the box office? For Eclectic Pictures and Hollywood Ventures Group, the solution is to revive an idea from a decade ago by announcing a female-led spin-off of Expendables titled The Expendabelles.

      If this sounds familiar, you're not mistaken; back in 2013, names like Meryl Streep, Cameron Diaz, and Milla Jovovich were being mentioned as potential stars, with Legally Blonde director Robert Luketic slated to direct the film in 2015.

      The Expendabelles even had an official synopsis: “some of the world’s deadliest female operatives must pose as high-class call-girls flown in by private jet to appease a dictator—and ultimately save the scientist and the day.”

      Fast forward to Cannes 2026, where The Expendables 3 debuted in 2014, and The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the project is progressing again as an origin story set in the late 1990s amidst Y2K-era anxieties and geopolitical turbulence. It aims to introduce a new generation of elite female operatives in an action-packed cinematic experience designed to enhance the franchise's mythology while also standing on its own.

      Despite earning over $855 million worldwide through four films, the series produced by Sylvester Stallone seemed to fizzle with Expendables 4, which managed just $37 million in 2023—a record low for the franchise.
