Will Smith is set to star in David Gordon Green’s action-thriller Supermax.
Will Smith has agreed to star in David Gordon Green’s action film Supermax, set in a prison, for Amazon MGM Studios. According to Deadline, Supermax will focus on two FBI agents looking into a murder that has occurred in the world’s most secure prison. Casting is currently in progress for the role of Smith’s female FBI partner.
Amazon MGM Studios secured the deal for the script written by David Weil and David J. Rosen (Hunters) for around $70 million, with plans to release the action-packed thriller on streaming instead of in theaters.
Supermax represents another genre transition for David Gordon Green, who recently directed the Amazon TV crime series Scarpetta, following his venture into horror, which led to the successful Halloween reboot ($259 million) and the less successful reimagining of The Exorcist, The Exorcist: Believer ($136 million).
Despite the controversy surrounding his Oscars incident, the $404 million box office success of Bad Boys: Ride or Die showed that audiences still respond positively to Smith’s star power, leading Amazon MGM Studios to provide Gordon Green with his largest budget yet for a film. Filming is expected to begin this summer.
