Exclusive Trailer for Bouchra Unveils a Celebrated, Intimate Hybrid Animation
If the recent animation offerings from Hollywood have felt somewhat uninspired, turn your attention to the independent filmmaking realm for one of this year’s most creative animated features. Bouchra, a hybrid of animation and live-action directed by Meriem Bennani and Orian Barki, marks their debut feature, skillfully blending heartfelt storytelling, documentary styles, and an animated cast that is anthropomorphized to explore a complex relationship between a queer Moroccan filmmaker and her mother. With a release set for June 26 by Film Movement at NYC’s Metrograph, we’re excited to exclusively unveil the trailer and poster.
Here’s the plot summary: “Struggling with writer’s block on her first film, Bouchra, a queer Moroccan jackal in NYC, initiates difficult yet necessary phone conversations with her mother in Casablanca, which begin to impact her project. Juggling the challenges of being an artist in New York, the divide in her identity between two homes, and various friendships and romantic pursuits, Bouchra's emotional journey with her mother and herself becomes her avenue for self-expression.”
Jared Mobarak commented in his review, “Inspired by a real-life dialogue between co-director Meriem Bennani and her own mother, Bouchra (co-directed with Orian Barki and co-written with them and Ayla Mrabet) begins with a phone call. Aicha (Yto Barrada) reaches out to her daughter from Morocco when Bouchra (Bennani) brings up a topic they’ve been avoiding for nearly a decade. In a creative slump, she has resolved to gain emotional relief through a screenplay that delves into the intricate relationship she shares with her parents, seeking insight from the other side.”
