Fatherland Trailer: Paweł Pawlikowski’s Cannes Award Winner Debuts This Fall
Following the success of Ida and his work during the Cold War, Paweł Pawlikowski made a return to Cannes this month with Fatherland, a drama featuring Sandra Hüller and Hanns Zischler, which earned him the Best Director award. With a fall release from MUBI on the horizon, the first trailer and poster have now been unveiled.
The synopsis states: “FATHERLAND focuses on the relationship between Thomas Mann, a Nobel Prize-winning author (played by Hanns Zischler), and his daughter Erika (portrayed by Sandra Hüller), who is an actress, writer, and rally driver. Set during the peak of the Cold War, the father and daughter embark on an emotional and demanding road trip in a black Buick, traversing a war-torn Germany—from US-occupied Frankfurt to Soviet-controlled Weimar. For the first time since the war, Mann returns to his homeland after making the difficult choice to escape to the safety of the United States.”
In his review, Luke Hicks remarked, “Despite the accessibility of Pawlikowski’s previous two films, Fatherland feels like a creation from a different director. The signature black-and-white cinematography from his regular collaborator Łukasz Żal is intricate, almost resembling marble, which connects it to Pawlikowski, as does the concise 82-minute runtime and square 1.37:1 aspect ratio. In some ways, Fatherland serves as the third installment of a World War II trilogy. However, its themes, pacing, and overall approach signify a new chapter for Pawlikowski—an auteur resembling a wise professor, akin to Mann.”
