Fatherland Trailer: Paweł Pawlikowski’s Cannes Victory Set to Release This Autumn
After "Ida" and "Cold War," Paweł Pawlikowski made his return to Cannes this month with "Fatherland," a drama featuring Sandra Hüller and Hanns Zischler, which earned him the Best Director award. With a release from MUBI coming this fall, the first trailer and poster have now been unveiled.
The synopsis reads: “FATHERLAND focuses on the bond between Nobel Prize-winning author Thomas Mann (Hanns Zischler) and his daughter Erika (Sandra Hüller) – an actress, writer, and rally driver. Set during the peak of the Cold War, the father and daughter embark on a challenging and emotional journey in a black Buick, traversing a war-torn Germany – from the US-controlled Frankfurt to the Soviet-occupied Weimar. This marks Mann's return to his homeland for the first time since the war, having made the difficult choice to escape to the safety of the US.”
Luke Hicks noted in his review, “While Pawlikowski’s previous two films were quite accessible, Fatherland feels as if it was crafted by a different filmmaker. The signature black-and-white cinematography (so refined it appears almost marbled) by frequent collaborator Łukasz Żal indicates Pawlikowski's touch, as does the concise 82-minute runtime and the squarish 1.37:1 aspect ratio. In some ways, Fatherland serves as the third installment of a World War II trilogy. However, the themes, pacing, and overall approach suggest the emergence of a new version of Pawlikowski, presenting himself as an erudite auteur reminiscent of a seasoned professor, much like Mann.”
