Fatherland Trailer: Paweł Pawlikowski’s Cannes Victory Set to Premiere This Fall
After Ida and the Cold War, Paweł Pawlikowski returned to Cannes this month with Fatherland, a drama featuring Sandra Hüller and Hanns Zischler, which earned him the Best Director award. Ahead of its fall release from MUBI, the initial trailer and poster have now been unveiled.
The synopsis reads: “FATHERLAND focuses on the bond between the Nobel Prize-winning author Thomas Mann (Hanns Zischler) and his daughter Erika (Sandra Hüller), who is an actress, writer, and rally driver. Set during the peak of the Cold War, the father and daughter undertake a difficult and emotional road trip in a black Buick, traveling through a devastated Germany—from the American-influenced Frankfurt to the Soviet-controlled Weimar. For the first time since the war, Mann returns to his homeland, having made the tough choice to escape to the safety of the US.”
Luke Hicks commented in his review, “Despite the accessibility of Pawlikowski’s last two films, Fatherland feels like it’s created by a different director. The signature black-and-white cinematography, which is so beautifully intricate it resembles marble, comes from his frequent collaborator Łukasz Żal, along with the concise 82-minute runtime and the nearly square 1.37:1 aspect ratio. In some respects, Fatherland represents the third installment in what can be seen as a World War II trilogy. However, the themes, pacing, and approach create a sense of a new Pawlikowski emerging in a scholarly manner—an auteur reminiscent of a seasoned professor, much like Mann.”
