Alice Rohrwacher to Direct The Baron in the Trees; Upcoming Film Will Mostly Be Silent

Following *Happy as Lazzaro* and *La Chimera*, Alice Rohrwacher has begun filming her new feature *Three Incestuous Sisters*, which features a talented cast including Dakota Johnson, Saoirse Ronan, Jessie Buckley, Josh O’Connor, Isabella Rossellini, Alba Rohrwacher, and Mick Jagger.

The screenplay is based on the 2005 novel by Audrey Niffenegger, author of *The Time Traveler’s Wife*, and was co-written by Ottessa Moshfegh and Alice Rohrwacher. The story revolves around three sisters (Johnson, Ronan, Buckley) who are infatuated with the son of a lighthouse keeper, played by O’Connor, with Jagger portraying the lighthouse keeper. It has now been revealed that the film will mostly, if not entirely, be silent, and there are rumors that it may be shot in black-and-white by cinematographer Hélène Louvart.

Variety also reports that Rohrwacher has already planned her next film, which is set to begin shooting in the latter half of next year: an adaptation of Italo Calvino’s coming-of-age tale *The Baron in the Trees*, first published in 1957. The narrative follows a 12-year-old baron named Cosimo Piovasco di Rondò who, after a conflict with his father, climbs a tree and spends the rest of his life there. Supported by Our Films, it seems we can expect back-to-back releases of Rohrwacher's films in 2027 and 2028.
