Danny Boyle aims to begin filming the third installment of 28 Years Later next year.
There have been numerous mixed signals regarding the future of the third movie in the 28 Years Later trilogy, but Danny Boyle has offered fans some optimism by expressing his desire to start filming 28 Years Later III next year. The Trainspotting director mentioned to JoBlo that he initially intended to shoot all three films back-to-back but faced time constraints due to location availability.
Boyle explained, “We ran out of time because it’s set in a part of Britain where filming is only possible during specific times of the year. We literally ran out of time this year, so hopefully, fingers crossed, it will be next year. There’s enthusiasm for it, and Alex (Garland) has created a fantastic script.”
Boyle’s 28 Years Later received critical acclaim and grossed $150 million worldwide. However, audience reactions were less enthusiastic, particularly regarding the film's controversial ending, which led into Nia DaCosta’s sequel, The Bone Temple.
Preliminary responses to early screenings of that film prompted Sony Pictures to announce a trilogy conclusion featuring Cillian Murphy, which was to be expedited into production. However, The Bone Temple significantly underperformed upon its release in early 2026, earning just over a third of the original film's revenue, totaling only $58 million globally. Since then, there has been no official update from Sony Pictures.
Next on Boyle's agenda is Ink, a biography of Rupert Murdoch featuring Jack O’Connell (Sinners), Guy Pearce (The Brutalist), and Claire Foy (H is for Hawk).
