Whalefall Trailer: Austin Abrams Becomes Imprisoned in the Beast's Stomach
Recently honored with the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for his novel Angel Down, author Daniel Kraus’ previous work Whalefall has been made into a film. Co-written and directed by Brian Duffield, the thriller stars Austin Abrams as a scuba diver searching for his father’s remains (played by Josh Brolin) who ends up swallowed alive by a whale. The cast also features Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy, and Emily Rudd, with the first trailer for the 20th Century Studios film now released ahead of its premiere on October 16.
Here’s the synopsis: “After the death of his father (Josh Brolin), Jay Gardiner (Austin Abrams) goes diving off the central coast of California in hopes of finding his remains, only to be consumed by a gigantic sperm whale. Trapped inside the whale's belly with only an hour of oxygen left, Jay realizes that the valuable lessons his father taught him might be the key to his survival.”
“I can’t be trusted to give an unbiased opinion, [since I co-wrote it,] but I believe it’s great," Daniel Kraus shared with our Dan Mecca at Letterboxd. “It’s incredibly emotional. Almost no one who has seen it hasn’t come out in tears. I think it’s fantastic.”
