The 12 Most Hilarious TV Shows We've Ever Seen

Behold, the most hilarious TV shows we've ever encountered.

      Let’s dive in.

Your favorites might differ — feel free to share your picks in the comments. Comedy is subjective, after all.

You might notice a lean towards more contemporary shows here. Given that comedy often revolves around bending the rules, older shows may struggle to remain funny as comedic norms evolve. A bold joke from the 1960s might not even register as humorous today.

Lastly, this isn’t a ranking of the “best” or “most cherished” comedies, nor is it about shows with our favorite characters. These are simply the programs that made us laugh uncontrollably.

With that in mind, here’s a look at the funniest TV shows we’ve ever seen.

      The Righteous Gemstones

      HBO

The Righteous Gemstones has just completed its fourth and final season, seamlessly blending comedy, drama, and shocking violence better than any other show we’ve witnessed.

The series centers on a mega-ministry family with an exceptional core cast, where everyone stands out. Benjamin Jason Barnes (Tim Baltz) had us laughing harder than any other character, especially with his reaction to Baby Billy (Walton Goggins) turning over a trailer stocked with “cure” remedies for various ailments.

You could easily argue that all three of Danny McBride’s HBO series — the others being Eastbound and Down and Vice Principals — deserve a spot on this funniest TV shows list.

      Favorite line: “The elixirs…”

      Chappelle’s Show

      Comedy Central

Dave Chappelle and Neal Brennan crafted one of the most mind-blowing sketch shows ever, which Comedy Central executives eventually admitted they struggled to comprehend, as Brennan recently discussed on the Joe Rogan podcast.

Favorite line: Of course, it’s “I’m Rick James, b—-."

      The Simpsons

      Fox

As the longest-running comedy in television history, it’s also arguably one of the finest. While its quality has varied over the seasons, The Simpsons has introduced more brilliant characters than any other show and offers plenty of simple wisdom as well.

Among the funniest TV shows, it holds the title for delivering unexpected jabs at beloved chain restaurants.

Favorite line: “I’m so hungry I could eat at Arby’s!”

      In Living Color

      Fox

In Living Color would go to any lengths for a laugh, no matter how offensive or grotesque, and for that, it rightfully earns its place on our list of funniest TV shows.

It heavily featured large characters and memorable catchphrases, from “Fire Marshall Bill” to the “Men on Film,” but we especially loved its quirky observational sketches like “Hey Mon,” a sitcom focused on a hardworking West Indian family.

Favorite line: “How many jobs he got?”

      It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia

      FX

We have immense respect for Always Sunny for never trying to depict its lead characters as intelligent, likable, or heroic over 16 seasons. Charlie Day, Glen Howerton, Kaitlin Olson, Rob McElhenney, and of course, Danny DeVito, might just be the funniest cast ever to grace a sitcom, even if Emmy voters overlook them because of their basic-cable status and tendency to offend.

We appreciate the audacious early episodes while also enjoying The Gang’s attempts (and failures) to virtue signal in the current supposedly more socially aware climate. We measure the funniest TV shows by how hard they make us laugh, and almost nothing gets us laughing harder than this.

Favorite line: “Turn the cage so I can see!”

      South Park

      Comedy Central

When others hesitate to speak out, South Park boldly addresses it. Over nearly 30 years, it has targeted everyone, and we love it — even when it pokes fun at things we cherish. It’s one of the funniest and least timid shows on television.

We think about the Mad Max episode every single day.

      Favorite line: “Respect my authoritah.”

      The Office

      NBC

Are you a fan of the British The Office or the American counterpart? The good news is, you don’t have to pick — both are fantastic.

Yesterday, we were on a plane and happened to watch the “Gay Witch Hunt” episode from 2006 — an era when more people were in the closet at work and same-sex marriage wasn’t yet legalized. It holds up remarkably well, right up to the cringe-inducing forced kiss between Michael (Steve Carell) and Oscar (Oscar Nuñez).

Favorite line: “That’s what she said. Or he said.”

      I Think You Should Leave

      Netflix

Created by Tim Robinson, a former Saturday Night Live writer and actor who was too eccentric for the show, I Think You Should Leave is the newest show on our list — and perhaps the one that has made us laugh the most.

It boasts an impressive batting average with
